  1. Been Bloggin’

So I’ve been scarcely updating this particular blog. However, I have been updating rather frequently at my Tumblr. It’s simplicity just makes it more convenient for constant updating. I don’t feel obliged to post text or descriptions with any of the pictures either. So, if you’re wondering what I’ve been up to then:

  2. Edgar Allan Poe

Shotty reproduction, but I guess it’ll do.

  3. Real People

Mock CD Cover for Real People: “The Joys of Losing Weight,” and unreleased album by Zach Condon’s Beirut.

  4. New Painting

This was a piece for a contest about the Seven Deadly Sins. The wrinkle effect was a happy accident. This was done in about 2 hours.

  5. Warning: Atypically Cute!

For my Design Methods class, I was asked to make a mock poster for the Free Library Festival. Now, this sort of subject matter is not what I’m used to. I had a bit of trouble coming up with something that was family-oriented, however I was able to come up with three color sketches. The one I liked was Captain Ahab stabbing Moby Dick amidst a giant splash of water and lightning. Well, the consensus was that it wasn’t really getting the point across… neither was the one of a slovenly Wilbur and under-personified Charlotte. So, the following is what I’m currently working on, and it is the cutest thing I’ve ever painted, rivaled only by a painting of a sleeping baby giraffe and flamingo from high school.

Anyway, here ya go, I’ve still got a couple more hours left to go on it, plus typography and other digital elements.

  6. Back Up!

Okay, so some of you… the few of you that actually follow this blog, may have noticed that my site was hacked… again. Well, I’ve gotten to be a bit of a pro of getting rid of these things, since it happens way too often, and we are back up with out too much grief. I even got to keep my past blog posts. I thought my .htaccess file locking out the entire country of Turkey would thwart the Turkish hackers, but then they decided to attack from France. I’m figuring out how to tighten up security, so this doesn’t happen again.

Additionally, you may have to update your bookmarks, as I changed the directory of my blog. It’s now at http://www.jonlaing.com/blog

Sorry if this actually inconvenienced anyone other than myself.

    Oh, and also…

    xoxo

  7. Holiday Cards

So this is the finished Holiday Card painting. I made sure that for the final print I made a nice big cheesy “Happy Holidays” to slap in the bottom right corner. I’ll spare you here.

  8. Semester's End

Technically, I have one last crit on Monday, but all the work is done for that, and I’ve posted all of it before. This is how the one piece came out. You’ll notice that I’ve added line. I did this for several reasons. I’ve realized that my painting style doesn’t do my skills as a draftsman any justice, also my skills as a painter are–well, let’s be honest–limited. Additionally, I’ve really been diggin’ on Pete Hawley lately, so I’m adopting some of that… He paints such cool babies!

Also, this is how my crit wall looked for Mark Tocchet.

Lastly, this is a holiday greeting card I’m going to send out to a few people as a thank you for all the money I got for my birthday this year. $400 worth of art supplies thanks to the generosity of people, most of whom I don’t know well enough. So anyway, this was a quicky, two days from start to finish. You’ll notice the line, and you’ll also notice I’m working thinner. I’m trying to hang onto my drawing for as long as possible. As usual the photo is awful. This is only exasperated by the fact it was wet.

  9. Home Stretch

This semester is rolling to a close. I deem the first piece done, since there really isn’t anything I can do to it that would significantly improve it. Additionally I hate doing tedious detail work, and I tend to fuck up a piece if I look at it too long past a certain point. The second could benefit from a little more TLC in the water regions, which I will probably do next week at some point.

  10. Progressing

It’s the home stretch to the end of the semester.
