  1. Some Progress

Since my recent run-in with some hackers, I’ve had very little time to actually update my blog, for obvious reasons. That shouldn’t be a problem anymore, I think. Through some clever coding and webmastering I think I was able to block the entire country of Turkey (the hackers’ origin) from getting onto this site.

So, now that that’s taken care of, how about I show you what I’ve been up to? I’ve been doing a lot of painting and such, in oils and watercolor.

The first of these was a 3-hour assignment just aimed at putting a figure in space. It’s quick and dirty, but these things aside, it came out pretty well. Obviously it’s a self-portrait, but to me it’s a little more than that. It’s set at 8th Avenue in Belmar, NJ. I’ve spent countless hours of my summer nights here, so it’s a pretty meaningful spot for me.

Moving on… as much as I’m enjoying watercolor these days, I can’t help but feel like I’m copping out for an “easy” medium, or a “grandma medium.” Watercolors aren’t very well respected in the art world, as unfortunate as that is. It’s my personal opinion that as long as it looks good, and you did it with your own hands and mind, the medium is irrelevant. However, it still seems that the general consensus is that “real” art is done in oil paint. To this end, I’ve been trying desperately to become more comfortable in oil, not just to please people, but because I personally feel like oil paints will allow me an extra level of drama that would be difficult to achieve in watercolor.

    underpainting

This is portrait I have been working on for my Figure Anatomy class. This is only the underpainting, which explains the green. When I am done, I promise he will be flesh colored. This was done using a variation of the “wipe out” technique, which has been used since the Rennaissance.

img_0998Using the same teqnique I did the following self portrait. This is only half of it. The whole project is supposed to be a “diptych.” Basically it’s a two panel painting, but between you and me, as soon as final crits are over, I’m probably going to burn the other panel.

Anyway, that’s what I’ve been up to. Hope you’ve enjoyed it.
