Been Bloggin’

So I’ve been scarcely updating this particular blog. However, I have been updating rather frequently at my Tumblr. It’s simplicity just makes it more convenient for constant updating. I don’t feel obliged to post text or descriptions with any of the pictures either. So, if you’re wondering what I’ve been up to then:

Edgar Allan Poe

Shotty reproduction, but I guess it’ll do.

Real People

Mock CD Cover for Real People: “The Joys of Losing Weight,” and unreleased album by Zach Condon’s Beirut.

New Painting

This was a piece for a contest about the Seven Deadly Sins. The wrinkle effect was a happy accident. This was done in about 2 hours.

Some Progress…

This is a mock CD cover I’m working on for the Youngblood Brass Band. I’m going to insert the type later through photoshop, though the type will essential be hand done.

All Systems are Go!

So my site is finally back up. I’ve switched my server, so I’m hoping all of my prior issues with the site will be behind me. Anyway, here is a project I just finished. The typography has a bit to be desired, but I’m still learning, so whatever.

What I'm up to…

Well, I’m counting the hours until my domain name switches over to a different server, so I can reinstate my website. Other than that, though, I’m working hard on paintings. The one painting I’m working on has had a bit of a rough start, so I’m a little embarrassed to show where I’m at so far (not looking foreward to that crit tomorrow). However, the other one I’m rather happy about. Hope you like it too.

Server Fail

So basically, my site was hacked once again. I’m not happy at all. I feel like my security weakness is in Wordpress being installed on my server. I am, however, switching servers, because really, it shouldn’t be this often that I get hacked. So, for now my blog is hosted on Wordpress.com, which is a pain in the ass, because they actually charge you to edit the CSS, which mean’s no custom look for Jon Laing. I really liked the simplicity of the theme that I made too. Oh well, eventually, I will put it back on my server, once I get a new one, and all will be well.

Case and point, bear with me please.

Warning: Atypically Cute!

For my Design Methods class, I was asked to make a mock poster for the Free Library Festival. Now, this sort of subject matter is not what I’m used to. I had a bit of trouble coming up with something that was family-oriented, however I was able to come up with three color sketches. The one I liked was Captain Ahab stabbing Moby Dick amidst a giant splash of water and lightning. Well, the consensus was that it wasn’t really getting the point across… neither was the one of a slovenly Wilbur and under-personified Charlotte. So, the following is what I’m currently working on, and it is the cutest thing I’ve ever painted, rivaled only by a painting of a sleeping baby giraffe and flamingo from high school.

Anyway, here ya go, I’ve still got a couple more hours left to go on it, plus typography and other digital elements.

Back Up!

Okay, so some of you… the few of you that actually follow this blog, may have noticed that my site was hacked… again. Well, I’ve gotten to be a bit of a pro of getting rid of these things, since it happens way too often, and we are back up with out too much grief. I even got to keep my past blog posts. I thought my .htaccess file locking out the entire country of Turkey would thwart the Turkish hackers, but then they decided to attack from France. I’m figuring out how to tighten up security, so this doesn’t happen again.

Additionally, you may have to update your bookmarks, as I changed the directory of my blog. It’s now at http://www.jonlaing.com/blog

Sorry if this actually inconvenienced anyone other than myself.

Oh, and also…
